Dear Residents,

I hope you had a wonderful summer and were able to spend quality time with family and friends, enjoying the sunshine as well as the many festivals and events held throughout the season.

This year, the Markham District Veterans Association is proudly celebrating its 75th anniversary. We will be hosting an open house on October 5th from noon till 4pm. We invite you to drop by, meet some of our members and veterans and help us commemorate this special milestone.
Additionally, the farmers market will be hosting an indigenous event on October 5th starting at 10am. Additional details on both of these are in the event section of the e-newsletter.

Regarding local development, the application for 5871 Highway # 7 is scheduled for discussion on our development services committee agenda on October 1st. However, we have asked for a deferral to allow time for exploring alternative options that better align with community interests while remaining acceptable to the landowner.
I do not have any updates regarding Smart Centers proposal at 144 Main St N (Mains Mansion location)

Our Comprehensive Zoning Bylaw which has been in progress for several years, has finally been approved. I will provide a high-level overview of key changes in the next e-newsletter to keep you informed.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the residents of Ward 4 for your patience during the recent park closures. I understand how frustrating it was to have the parks unavailable during the summer months and have asked staff to look at next year's schedule for the remaining parks and to try and minimize the time which they are closed.

Lastly, we are frequently asked to help promote local events happening across the city.  Please scroll down to see a list of upcoming events you might find interesting.

And of course, a huge congratulations to Canada's Olympic athletes and medal winners. Their achievements are truly remarkable and we are all proud of their incredible success.

Regards

Karen Rea

FIBRE from telMAX

I have received a number of calls from residents that have received a door hanger recently from telMAX which is a telecommunications company. telMAX recently signed a Municipal Access Agreement with the City. At this time, they are in the design stage and need to identify where utilities are located on city-owned property. Therefore, you may see flags on your lawns or boulevards. This does not mean you have to change your telcom provider; it is another company offering similar services to Bell and Rogers, etc.
This is an interesting Toronto Star Article on the current state of OLT Hearings where Rate Payer's Associations and Third Party groups cannot appeal development applications. You can read the Toronto Star article on the website or click the button below.

Dumping is Illegal

Dumping garbage is prohibited, including at community mailboxes. If caught, the fine can be up to $2000. This picture was taken in July when Savindi and I went to clean up this mailbox after a resident alerted us to its state. We all have a responsibility to keep our common public spaces clean. If you receive flyers in the mail, please take them home and put them in your recycling.
Online Collision Reporting

York Regional Police has expanded its online collision reporting service to include motorists involved in collisions across the entire region, effective immediately.

Before reporting a collision online: Motorists must determine if their collision is self-reportable by calling the non-emergency line at 1-866-876-5423 to speak to a call taker or by visiting yrp.ca/CollisionReport

Motorists must receive an incident number from a call taker at the non-emergency line

DANCES AND DREAMS

Saturday, October 19, 2024 at 8 p.m.

Flato Markham Theatre

A suite drawn from Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty ballet opens the season; this music will likely be most familiar from the Walt Disney film of the same name whose score—including the famous “Once Upon a Dream” song—was adapted from Tchaikovsky’s ballet.

Markham At The Movies October Screening

The second film of Markham At the Movies is Director Ava DuVernay's  Origin. The film brings to life the inspired story of Pulitzer Prize winner Isabel Wilkerson – her life, love and the creation of her seminal book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents – based on her quest around the globe to discover where racial injustice comes from.

Tickets are $15 (cash) at the front entrance or online at www.flatomarkhamtheatre.ca
