Dear Residents,

I hope you all had a wonderful summer and managed to stay cool during those long stretches of hot days!
The summer months are usually a little quieter, which gives us time to catch up on ongoing issues and do some door-to-door visits. It was great meeting some residents over the past few weeks.

This is a short e-newsletter to highlight a couple of important items coming forward to our development services committee on September 9th, 2025, at 7pm. These meetings provide an opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback.
  • Cadillac Fairview - zoning amendment application for their phase 1 lands.
  • Housing Accelerator Fund - the city is considering allowing up to four units (including the primary house) on each lot within Markham.

In addition, Councillor Keyes and I will be co-hosting a community information meeting (CIM) on Thursday, September 18th at 6.30 pm. This meeting will provide residents with an overview of the proposed development located at 8651 Ninth Line (north-east corner of Ninth Line and Hwy # 7), ask questions and provide feedback, prior to a formal public statutory meeting.

Additional details on all three topics are further below in the e-newsletter.

And of course, fall also means community traditions are returning! Doors Open is happening on Sept 20th and Applefest is back at the Markham Museum on September 27th 2025.

I hope everyone enjoys the last few days of summer.

Karen Rea

Public Statutory Meeting - Sept 9th, 2025 at 7 pm

Cadillac Fairview is bringing forward a zoning amendment application for the Phase 1 Lands at Markville. This application outlines proposed changes to land use, building heights, and density that will guide the future redevelopment of this area. City staff and the applicant will be presenting details, and there will be an opportunity for deputations.

Public Statutory Meeting - September 9th, 2025 at  7 pm

As part of the Housing Accelerator Fund, the city is proposing amendments to the Markham Official Plan, 2014 and various zoning by-laws that would allow up to four (4) residential units on a single lot, including the primary house, where three (3) units per lot in total are currently permitted, subject to appropriate zoning, and maintaining protections for environmentally sensitive areas (some areas will be excluded). Compliance with the Ontario Building Code, site servicing capacity, parking, setbacks, height, and lot coverage regulations would still be required.
In addition to the Notice of Public Meeting, I have been informed that City Staff have also created an Additional Residential Units Webpage for residents and have provided an email address where residents can submit questions and comments.

An Additional Residential Unit (ARU) is a self-contained dwelling with its own kitchen, bathroom and private entrance. An ARU can be located within the main house (e.g., basement apartment), in a separate unit above a detached garage or, in a detached accessory building on the same property.

Join Councillor Keyes and I on Thursday, September 18th 2025, at 6.30pm at the Cornell Community Centre (Youth Centre Room, upper level) to learn more about the development proposal. (Please validate your parking ticket inside before leaving)
An application to amend the Official Plan and Zoning By-Law has been received for 8651 Ninth Line. The proposal includes five development blocks containing 3771 high-rise apartment units, a public park and 3933 parking spaces. Plans also include commercial uses at street level along Rustle Woods Avenue, a 6-story building and a request to allow building heights up to 33 stories. More Details can be found on the city website under MAPPIT
