Councillor Karen Rea - Ward 4 March update
Take Survey
Dear Residents,

Happy St Paddy's Day!

Hope everyone has recovered from losing an hour of sleep and is looking forward to warmer days ahead.

With spring just around the corner and the snow melting, we often uncover garbage that has been hidden over the winter months. If you are interested in organizing a spring clean-up in your area, we would be happy to help by providing bags and gloves. Please reach out to Savindi at sjinasena@markham.ca and she would be happy to help co-ordinate.

This Thursday, I will be hosting my first community information meeting (CIM) of the year. Our next phase of flood control is set to begin soon, with letters already delivered to homes that will be directly affected. One of the biggest impacts, regardless of where you live, will be the full closure of a section of Wootten Way North, similar to what we experienced with Church St in 2024. We appreciate your patience as this essential work continues.

On March 25th, we will be holding a Public Open House to discuss road safety and our goal of achieving Vision Zero. More details on both topics can be found further down in this newsletter.

Thank you to everyone that participated in the previous survey on E-bikes and E-scooters.  I will share a summary with everyone next month.

Unlike Ward 4, Ward 3 has significant land available for development. Councillor McAlpine's newsletter will provide information on applications in Unionville and other items of interest.

Lastly, I know many residents have been asking about the Markville Secondary Plan. At this time, I do not have a timeline for when the secondary plan or the Cadillac Fairview application will be on our agenda for discussion.

Looking forward to keeping you updated and engaged in the months ahead!

Warm regards,

Karen Rea

Block Pruning of City Trees

Please be advised that city contractors are scheduled to begin street block pruning in the Markham Village Area - Hwy # 7 to 16th Avenue and betweeen Main St Markham and Ninth Line.

This project of street tree pruning is very specific to ensure the overall tree health, proper street and utility elevation and location documentation.

This project is to be completed before the tree's "leaf out" in the spring.
We had another successful 360Experience to raise awareness about at-risk-youth and homeless youth in York Region and Markham. While the temperature was milder than in previous years, the wind was relentless. This experience
serves as a small glimpse into the reality faced by many young people. While participants spend one night in the cold, countless youth endure these hard conditions every night, without the safety and warmth of a home. Donations are still being accepted until the end of the month.  DONATE HERE

Spring thaw can increase the risk of flooding as melting snow and seasonal rainfall lead to rising water levels. TRCA flood forecasting and warning program actively monitors these conditions and provides timely updates to help keep communities informed. Spring Safety Message

Winter Maintenance Workshop and Survey Results

What a winter we had! This season felt like a true Canadian winter, reminiscent of years past- plenty of snow and great opportunities for local skiing and winter actvities.

Mind you, I remember it being much colder back in the day.

The sheer amount of snow that fell within just a few days created challenges for many, including our new winter maintenance contractor that just came on board. Despite these difficulties, I received numerous emails thanking our staff for their hard work in tackling the tough conditions—along with some feedback regarding areas for improvement and frustration.

Each time we experience a major snowfall, and large windrows pile up at the bottom of our driveways, there are renewed calls for increased service levels—such as more frequent plowing of local roads and city-wide windrow clearing for every home.

To provide context, I thought it would be helpful to share the previous Winter Workshop presentations:

Winter Maintenance Workshop for June 4th 2019.

Winter Maintenance Workshop June 17th 2019.

June 19th 2023.

IPSOS Survey Results.

After reading through the presentations and the survey results, the question becomes do we really want to spend millions of dollars for the few times a season, when snow seems to be unmanageble?  A question, I am sure will come up again when we review the snow clearing for this winter season.
