Oct 4th 2025.
Dear Residents,
Welcome to fall! If you have chance, I encourage you to enjoy a hike in Milne Conservation - the autumn colours are spectacular this time of year and it looks like we will have a few more summer-like days to take it all in.
Thank you to everyone who attended the recent Community Information Meeting at the Cornell Community Centre regarding the proposed development at 9th Line & Highway 7. We had a great turnout with many thoughtful questions and comments.
The city is holding another public statutory meeting about "additional residential units" (ARU's). This is your chance to learn about proposed changes to the City's Official Plan and zoning rules, ask questions and share feedback. An ARU is an extra unit in a home, such as a basement apartment. The proposed changes would allow up to 4 units on a single lot, including the main house. Please scroll down for dates and times of the Development Services and the Public Statutory meetings.
On a more serious note, several concerning incidents (gun shots) in recent days have understandably left many of us uneasy. I am working to arrange a Community Information Meeting on safety towards the end of October or early November, pending availability of space at the Markham Village Community Centre, as well as participation from York Regional Police and Fire Services.
As we move into the season of Thanksgiving, I hope you find time to enjoy the beauty of fall, connect with loved ones, and celebrate all that we are grateful for. Wishing you and your families a safe, peaceful, and enjoyable season.
Regards,
Karen

The city is providing an additional public statutory meeting for residents to attend and to voice their opinion on the proposed amendments to the Markham Official Plan, 2014 and various zoning by-laws that would allow up to four (4) residential units on a single lot, including the primary house, where three (3) units per lot in total are currently permitted, subject to appropriate zoning, and maintaining protections for environmentally sensitive areas (some areas will be excluded). Compliance with the Ontario Building Code, site servicing capacity, parking, setbacks, height, and lot coverage regulations would still be required.
Meetings on this topic, which you can attend in person or virtually, are as follows:
Recommendation Report to DSC - October 14th 9.30 am Agenda (condition for staff to consider additional input/modifications that arise from the Public Statutory meeting prior to adoption by Council)
Council Meeting - October 28th 1 pm.

Stop Dumping
Illegal dumping continues to be a problem in some areas,
with residents finding pet waste, furniture, and even lawn equipment left in public spaces. This is not acceptable.
-
Do not dump garbage or large items in our parks, creeks, or neighbourhood spaces.
-
Please help by picking up small waste & notifying us where it is for city staff to collect.
-
Report large dumped items to customerservice@markham.ca with location and photos.
-
If you witness dumping, report it to the city so By-Law Enforcement can investigate.
Let’s keep our community clean and safe for everyone.
